Before & After: Charming Historic Home with a Touch of Modern

This historic home was built in the early 1940s and had charm for days, but needed some serious help in the small kitchen space, especially storage and functionality. We loved working on this Transitional redesign with the homeowner – Phoenix area lifestyle blogger Sakura Considine.

The original kitchen only had two drawers and they bumped into each other when opened! This wasn’t a limitation of the available space, but rather how the space was arranged. If you have a small kitchen, it’s easy to blame the lack of a storage on the size of the room, but if you take a closer look you might be surprised at the amount of usable space that you can recover with smart design.

This was our client’s first remodel, so it was very important to keep the project as simple as possible. This required us to leave leave the existing windows and floorplan unchanged, and to leave the appliances in their existing locations.

Given those project requirements, how did our designer increase the storage so dramatically? The combination of several small design decisions made a big difference!

  • Added an island with deep drawers for bonus storage
  • Introduced a lazy susan in the corner cabinet
  • Added a pantry and microwave station on the opposite wall where there weren’t cabinets before
  • Added bench drawers under the window for a place to gather
  • Increased the depth of the cabinets above the fridge

Our Transitional design combines a classic door style with modern hardware that fit with our client’s wish to modernize the space while maintaining the historic look of the home. The custom Sherwin Williams color lends warmth while the white upper cabinets keep the space feeling bright and open.

Our client loves that her new kitchen looks great and gives her so much more storage, both on and below the countertops. Our designer was able to make dramatic improvements to the functionality while creating such an inviting space where people love to hang out.
